Sperm freezing: when to consider it, how to prepare and what it costs
Male fertility should not be an uncomfortable subject or a last-minute consideration. Clear information can help you plan and take an active role in decisions.

The short answer
Sperm freezing stores a sample for possible future reproductive treatment. It may be considered before treatment that could affect fertility, or for personal and logistical planning. Assessment, collection instructions and consent are required. Future use depends on sample quality and the reproductive procedure needed at that time.
When might sperm freezing be considered?
It may be an option before certain medical treatments that could affect fertility, before a vasectomy or when being available to provide a sample on treatment day may be difficult.
If you have a cancer diagnosis, ask for coordination with your treating team before starting. Do not delay or change medical treatment on your own.

Preparing to provide a sample
Contact the laboratory before attending. It should confirm your appointment, required tests, abstinence interval and collection method. Do not substitute general instructions for individual directions you have received.
- Report a recent fever or illness.
- Share which medicines you use.
- Ask what identification and consent documents to bring.
- Mention any concern about producing the sample in advance.
Do not use a household container or transport a sample without the laboratory’s specific instructions.

What happens in the laboratory?
The sample is assessed and prepared with a protective medium for freezing. The team should explain how many units will be stored and what the analysis tells you.
Not all sperm survive thawing. Future use, such as insemination or IVF/ICSI, depends on the sample assessment and the overall reproductive situation.

Frequently asked questions
Does freezing sperm guarantee I can have a child?

Will I need several samples?
That depends on assessment and intended use. Ask how many collections the laboratory recommends and which are included in your quote.
Can it be done before cancer treatment?
It may be considered. Request early coordination between oncology and fertility care to explore options without changing your cancer treatment independently.
