Nutrition before and during IVF: what to discuss with your nutrition professional

Preparing does not mean eating perfectly. A plan you can sustain, enjoy and understand can be more useful than a list of restrictions that adds worry to your day.

The short answer

Before and during IVF, nutrition should reflect your health, routines and medical team’s advice. A nutrition consultation can review individual needs and supplements without imposing a universal diet. No food guarantees implantation; the aim is to care for your nutritional health and coordinate it with your medical treatment.

What should you bring to your first appointment?

  • Your treatment plan and instructions already received.
  • A list of medication, vitamins, supplements and herbal products.
  • Relevant history such as diabetes, digestive problems, allergies or dietary restrictions.
  • Recent test results, if you have them.
  • A description of your schedule, usual meals and any difficulties eating.

The conversation should start with your circumstances: budget, preferences, work, food culture and relationship with eating.

Habits to discuss with your team

Variety and regularity

A varied diet helps meet nutritional needs. Discuss how to include vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains and protein sources that you tolerate and enjoy. Every day does not have to look the same.

Preparing for a possible pregnancy

Preconception health guidance includes reviewing folic acid and avoiding alcohol when trying to conceive. Your professional should advise on the dose and adjustments appropriate to your history.

Supplements: bring the names, not just “vitamins”

Write down the brand, ingredients and doses of everything you take. Products described as natural also need review, particularly when combined with medication.

Do not add or stop treatments because of social media advice. If a supplement is proposed, ask which need it addresses, how long you would use it and how its usefulness will be reviewed.

During stimulation and around egg retrieval

Ask what to do if your appetite or tolerance of certain foods changes. Fasting instructions for egg retrieval or procedures involving sedation must come from the team providing care; general nutrition guidance does not replace them.

Before transfer, try not to turn eating into a test of control. If a particular food worries you, bring the question to your consultation for advice relevant to your circumstances.
